Fractions
The numbers of the form a/b, where a and b are whole numbers and b is not equal to zero, are known as fractions.
In a/b, we call a as numerator and b as denominator.
Examples:
i) 5/6 is a fraction in which numerator = 5 and denominator = 6.
ii) 52/7 is a fraction in which numerator = 52 and denominator = 7.

Various types of Fractions
1. Decimal
fraction
A fraction whose denominator is any of the numbers 10, 100, 1000, etc., is called a decimal fraction.
Examples:
i) 8/10, 21/100, 23/1000, etc., are the examples of decimal fractions.
2. Vulgar fraction
A fraction whose denominator is a whole number, other than 10, 100, 1000, etc., is called a vulgar fraction.
Examples:
3/7, 5/13, 15/22, etc., are all vulgar fraction.
3. Proper fraction
A fraction whose numerator is less than its denominator, is called a proper fraction.
Examples:
3/5, 5/7, 6/7, 43/50, etc., are all proper fractions.
4. Improper fraction
A fraction whose numerator is more than or equal to its denominator, is called an improper fraction.
Examples:
10/7, 12/5, 21/8, 22/22, etc., are all improper fractions.
5. Equivalent fractions
A given fraction and the fraction obtained by multiplying (or dividing) its numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number, are called equivalent fractions.
Thus, 4/5, 8/18, 12/15, etc., are all equivalent fractions.
6. Like fractions
Fractions having the same denominator but different numerators are called like fractions.
Thus, 11/13, 12/13, 5/13, etc., are all like fractions.
7. Unlike fractions
Fractions having different denominators are called unlike fractions.
Thus, 3/4, 5/7, 8/9, etc., are all unlike fractions.

Sometimes I got confused with types of fraction to kinds of fractions. There are several terms for fraction where I am confused to where they should be categorized to. Proper fraction, improper fraction, mixed number, whole number, equivalent fractions, like fractions, and unlike fractions are terms that should be categorized properly to avoid a confusion.
